When should I schedule my Maternity Photography Session?

I recommend booking your session around the 32-week mark.  At this point you’ll be in your final trimester and your tummy will have beautiful shape.  You’ll have 2 months left in your pregnancy, give or take. Your session has a turn-around time, and it ensures your images are delivered on time…unless your little one makes an early appearance of course.

What should I do to prepare for my Maternity Session?

Treat yourself queen! Let’s capture the glow. Find an outfit that makes you feel good! We’ll chat a bit more about maternity outfits below. A few days before your session treat yourself to a nail appointment so we can take lots of beautiful images with your hands on your tummy.

Spend some time doing your hair and makeup, don’t forget to moisturize!  Make sure you have a lot of time to get ready so you don’t feel rushed and sweaty.

Avoid wearing watches and take those hair ties off your wrist girl!

What should I pack for my photography session?

If you have some cute items, feel free to bring them along. I aim to capture emotion and connection in my work and often feel props can be distracting. Lean more towards accessories; think layers! Hats, scarves, blankets.

With all that being said, if it’s of interest to you, bring baby items such as shoes, onesies, and ultrasound images.

Pack some water, tissues and ChapStick.

What should I wear for my Maternity Session?

Maternity clothes are often tight to show off your bump, but it’s important to note that what looks good in person doesn’t always look good on camera. We want to do the opposite in a photoshoot: pick clothing that drapes or flows to catch the light and the wind. Long maxi or midi dresses are great options – bonus if they hit the ground to hide swollen ankles and you can wear comfy shoes! The perfect outfit should be comfortable and not distract for your shape.  Loud, bold colours should be avoided. Neutral and earthy tones will always be your friend.

Bring a change of clothes! We can always do two looks.

What should my family or partner wear for my maternity photos?

Avoid matching - everyone in black can quickly become a group of floating heads. Think complimentary colours or adding a patterned element to one person. If one person is formal, everyone should be formal. It would be silly if someone was in shorts and everyone else is in dress pants. All my sessions come with a planning guide that breaks down the colour wheel and suggests different fabrics to help plan your outfits!

Be you – Communicate with your photographer:

Prior to your session communicate your vision to your photographer. I often ask clients to look through some of my previous work or Pinterest.  Screenshot some shots you like and send them my way. It doesn’t mean we’ll be creating these exact photos – it shows me the vibe you’re going for.  Your photographer should be able to recommend locations and the best time of day to capture your session based on info you’ve provided.

Be ready to get a little messy. I often ask couples to walk through tall grass or get wet in the lake! Adding playful elements can build connection and movement in an image. Let loose – be authentic – have fun! If your photographer has a suggestion, roll with it. Sometimes the oddest poses or positions create the best photographs. Remember you didn’t just hire a photographer; you hired an artist. By working together and communicating the results will be incredible!

I always recommend couples make a date out of their session. You’re all dolled up, hit the town. Get some dinner and celebrate your growing family!
